A spokesman for North Yorkshire police said: "We were called at 9.55 this morning following reports that two people were found dead in a boat in Whitby harbour. All I can confirm is that two bodies were found." In a statement, North Yorkshire police said: "Officers were called 9.55am, to a boat moored in Whitby harbour after concern was raised for the safety of the occupants. On arrival they found the bodies of two people who had sadly been pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
A source close to the investigation added: "It is looking like it might be carbon monoxide poisoning. Although it is unexplained at this stage it does not look suspicious." "The next of kin have not yet been informed of the deaths. Although the deaths are currently unexplained there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and no one else is being sought in connection with the incident."

Three trawlers could also be seen moored in the bay. The local Whitby Gazette said the boat where the bodies were found was a visiting scallop trawler.
