Man seriously injured after Gillingham road row Gillingham row: Man killed by car 'used as weapon'
(about 5 hours later)
A man is critically ill after being run down by a car following an argument at a road junction in Kent. A 33-year-old man has died after being run down by a car following an argument at a road junction in Kent.
It followed a row between two men in a Ford Mondeo and two pedestrians in Castlemaine Avenue, Gillingham. John Hedges, from Gillingham, was left in a critical condition after a green Ford Mondeo was deliberately driven at him in the town's Castlemaine Avenue.
The men walked off down the road before the car was driven towards them hitting one of them. Kent Police said they were treating it as a "criminal act". He had been walking with a friend after the row with the two men in the car, which was driven through railings to hit him at 20:50 GMT on Thursday.
The second pedestrian was unhurt and ran to raise the alarm at a nearby badminton club. Kent Police said his death was being treated as murder.
The men in the green car were described as dark-skinned, in their 20s and wearing casual clothes. The other man was unhurt and ran to raise the alarm at a nearby badminton club.
Castlemaine Avenue and Grange Road were closed until about 05:00 on Thursday. Mr Hedges was trapped underneath the stolen estate car, which Det Ch Insp John Clayden said was used as a weapon.
Any witnesses to the attack at 20:50 GMT on Wednesday are asked to contact police. 'Arranged to meet'
"It appears to have been a dispute between Mr Hedges and his friend and two other people," said Mr Clayden.
"My gut instinct suggests that they knew each other and had probably arranged to meet."
The men in the car were described as dark-skinned, in their 20s and wearing casual clothes.
Castlemaine Avenue and Grange Road were closed until about 05:00 on Friday.
Any witnesses to the attack are asked to contact police.
"CCTV footage shows a lot of people in cars and on foot who would have seen the altercation that started down by Grange Road," said Mr Clayden.
