A rescue helicopter and the Montrose lifeboat have been searching, while coastguard teams scoured the shoreline. Search teams scoured the water and shoreline until about midnight, but no trace of the man was found.
A spokesman for the coastguard said: "We have completed our search and nothing has been found." It is understood the search will not be resumed on Monday.
Teams will conduct further searches on Sunday evening at low water. Large sea swells of two to three metres have been reported in the area. A rescue helicopter, coastguard teams and the Montrose lifeboat were involved in the operation.
