"The person who took 20 people and a teacher hostage is a student in the upper classes at the same school," an interior ministry spokesman said on state TV. He was armed with two rifles belonging to his father.
"He has been neutralised and all the students have been freed," he said. A school security guard was unable to stop him from entering, but managed to hit an alarm before following him to his classroom, the spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency said, quoted by the Associated Press news agency.
"One policeman was fatally wounded during the operation and died in hospital, and a teacher at School No 263 was also killed," he added. The student shot dead a geography teacher and opened fire on police officers who responded to the alarm, wounding one and killing another, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
It is not clear how the teacher and the policeman died. He then took more than 20 people hostage in a classroom.
A school official told Russian television that all children and teachers had been evacuated from the school after the incident. He fired at least 11 times from a small-calibre rifle, the spokesman is quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
The gunman opened fire on police officers who arrived at the scene, reports say. The boy was an excellent student and apparently had an emotional breakdown, the spokesman said.
He had made no demands, reports say. His father was called to the school; wearing a bullet-proof vest, he went into the building to speak to his son.
The hostages were freed unharmed.
Soon after, the student was disarmed and taken into custody.
