The Planning Service said that the change was aimed at ensuring value for money. A Planning Service spokeswoman said the decision was in line with government advertising policy and subject to detailed consultation.
"Planning issues have a strong local focus and it is important that information on applications is published in ways which can be accessed at a local level," the department said. "The move will significantly increase the number of people in Greater Belfast who will have access to planning applications and will significantly reduce the cost of advertising," she said.
"Planning applications which have a regional significance will continue to be advertised in the daily newspapers."
