The M23 has been closed in both directions after a pedestrian was hit by a car. A man has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening head injuries after he was hit by a car on the M23 in West Sussex.
Sussex Police said the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed near Crawley for the air ambulance to land. Part of the motorway was closed in both directions near Crawley to allow the air ambulance to reach the 19-year-old man.
A 19-year-old man had been taken to hospital in London with life-threatening head injuries after the collision, officers said. Sussex Police said the incident happened just before 12:00 GMT between junctions 10 and 11.
They said they were working to reopen the road as soon as possible. The motorway was closed for several hours but later reopened.
The area is near Gatwick Airport in West Sussex.
Earlier, Gatwick tweeted a warning to passengers to allow extra time to reach the airport.
Police said the accident happened just before 12:00 GMT between junctions 10 and 11.
