Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday canceled a trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, which would have been his first to the region as prime minister, to deal with extraordinary flooding in England. In the Thames Valley, which currently faces the most severe flood warnings, about 1,000 homes have been evacuated, and 1,600 military personnel had been deployed. The prime minister spent the last two days touring a number of villages, even as questions arose over whether the floods were his “Katrina moment,” a reference to the American government’s response to the hurricane that hit New Orleans in 2005.
