Two pipe bombs have been thrown at a house in Newry, County Down, according to an MLA from the city. A pipe bomb has exploded in a housing estate in Newry, County Down, police have said.
Dominic Bradley from the SDLP said the pipe bombs were thrown at the property in Patrician Park, off the Dublin Road, on Wednesday night. The explosion happened outside a house in Patrician Park, off the Dublin Road, at about 21:20 GMT on Wednesday.
Police cordoned off the street following reports of an explosion at about 20:30 GMT. The blast caused damage to the house and a car parked outside the property, but no-one was injured.
It is understood the house and some cars were damaged but there were no reports of any injuries. Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley said he has been told that two pipe bombs were thrown at the house and he described it as a "senseless" attack.
In a statement, Mr Bradley said: "This house is in a quiet residential area and this was a senseless attack for which there is absolutely no justification. It could easily have caused injury or death. Army bomb disposal officers and police were called to the scene and they cordoned off area for about three hours while the scene was examined.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland representative said a motive for the pipe bomb attack has not yet been established and appealed for anyone with information about it to contact them..
In a statement, Mr Bradley said: "This house is in a quiet residential area and this was a senseless attack for which there is absolutely no justification.
"It could easily have caused injury or death," The SDLP MLA added.
