Around 20 firefighters are tackling a fire affecting two disused water towers at the National Archives at Kew, in London. A fire has broken out at the National Archives in Kew, home to some of the UK's most important historical documents.
London Fire Brigade were called to the Richmond site at 12:33 GMT when fire took hold of the towers on the site of the building. Some 20 firefighters are tackling the blaze, which is affecting two disused water towers at the site in Richmond, south-west London.
A spokesman said the fire was under control. London Fire Brigade, which was called out at about 12:30 GMT, said the blaze was now under control.
The National Archives is the official UK government archive and publisher.
Held there are 11 million historical documents of national importance, some dating back more than 1,000 years.
Among its collection are the Domesday Book, parchment, electronic records, photographs, posters, maps and paintings.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "No-one is trapped or injured."
National Archives UK tweeted: "We can confirm the fire has been put out, but we will stay closed to the public in order to recover the building."
