Haniya unhurt in convoy shooting

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya of the ruling party Hamas was unhurt after his convoy came under fire in Gaza on Friday, officials said.

Relatives of a member of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement killed in recent factional fighting opened fire, officials said.

No-one was hurt, but one of the cars in the convoy was torched, witnesses said.

The news came as Fatah and Hamas reached a deal aimed at ending recent violence between their supporters.

The incident took place in the Nusseirat refugee camp after Mr Haniya had spoken at a local mosque.

The Hamas leader's armoured Mercedes car was not hit, security officials said.

Dialogue

About 20 people have been killed in Palestinian factional fighting in recent weeks.

Hamas - which leads the government - and Fatah are locked in a power struggle and the political differences between them remain deep.

At a meeting in Gaza brokered by Egyptian mediators, the two factions agreed to refrain from acts that raised tensions.

They also committed to dialogue as the means of resolving their differences.

Similar agreements have been made in the past but have not lasted.

There was no immediate explanation for the attack, although there have been tensions between rival Palestinian political factions in recent weeks.
