Baby boy missing as car stolen in Canberra Baby boy found safe in Canberra after being taken unknowingly by car thief
(about 1 hour later)
An eight-month-old baby boy is missing after his mother’s car was stolen in suburban Canberra. A seven-month-old baby boy taken unknowingly by a car thief has been found safe in Canberra.
Police say the boy’s mother went to help a man whose car had broken down in Gungahlin about 2pm (AEDT) on Thursday but he jumped into her car and took off with the boy inside. The infant was missing for more than an hour after a man took off in the boy’s mother’s Mazda from a northern Canberra suburb about 2pm (AEDT) Thursday.
The man is described as having a slim build, Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s, wearing white runners and a black baseball cap. When the mother stopped in Gungahlin to offer help to a man who appeared to have broken down, he jumped in her car and drove off.
The car is a silver 1999 Mazda 323 Protege with ACT registration YEZ70R and police are appealing for the public’s help in locating it. The boys’ parents and several witnesses were there when the car was stolen and the thief did not know the baby was inside, ACT Police Superintendent Kenton Turner said.
Anyone who sees the car should call ACT Policing on 131 444 immediately.
