Police vehicle involved in crash Police officer dies in road crash

Two people have been seriously injured in a road accident on the A77 in Ayrshire near Prestwick Airport. A police officer has been killed and another has been seriously injured in a road crash in Ayrshire.
Two vehicles were involved, one of which belonged to Strathclyde Police. A female motorist was also injured in the collision between an unmarked police vehicle and a 4x4 vehicle on the A77 near Symington on Friday evening.
The accident happened just after 1900 BST. In a separate incident half an hour earlier a woman pedestrian was hurt few miles away in Dundonald. The male police officer, who was driving, died at the scene. His male passenger and the woman were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency services were at the scene of the Symington crash and the northbound carriageway was closed from the Dutchouse roundabout. The A77 was expected to remain closed northbound until at least lunchtime.
Police confirmed that a force vehicle was involved but beyond that are making no comment. The crash happened shortly after 1900 BST on Friday.
Strathclyde Police are investigating the crash and appealed for witnesses.
