An Ulster Unionist MLA has said his party should quit the power-sharing executive.

Basil McCrea's call comes ahead of the Ulster Unionist's annual conference on Saturday.

Mr McCrea says party leader Sir Reg Empey was right to go into government but says it is now time for a rethink.

"We have an executive committee which is basically a sham, with people saying 'you have to agree to everything'," said the Lagan Valley representative.

"But we don't have to agree to everything. There are issues such as water tax where we have to provide some sort of opposition.

"Yesterday (Thursday) was a watershed. The budget debate was one nice comment after another - it's a complete and utter sham, and it's totally undemocratic. Somebody somewhere is going to have to find a way of sorting this out."
