Ambulance crews pronounced the pair dead after finding them at Barlows scrapyard, Uttoxeter, on Friday night. The couple were found dead at Barlows scrapyard, Uttoxeter, on Friday night.
A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene by police and is being held in custody at Burton police station. Police confirmed both had died of head injuries but said that post-mortem tests on the pair would not be finished until Sunday.
The bodies of the couple, who are believed to have lived locally, are still at the scene, which has been sealed off by police. Police have been granted a 12-hour extension until 0630 GMT on Sunday to question a 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.
A Staffordshire police spokesman said the arrested man was at the scrapyard when officers arrived. The scrapyard, just off the A50, is being guarded by police with forensicteams scouring the compound that also encloses a bungalow.
"The bodies remain in situ and the scene has been cordoned off and a forensic examination has begun," he said. Chief Inspector Chris Blagbrough sought to reassure the community after thedeaths, which are not said to be linked to the murder of a 30-year-old womanelsewhere in the town.
"It is expected that post-mortem examinations will be carried out [on Saturday]." He said: "We understand people in the Uttoxeter area will be concernedfollowing the two recent unconnected deaths.
"We have got our local beat and police community support officer out and aboutin the town listening to people's concerns and providing a highly visible andreassuring presence."
