DUP Deputy Leader Peter Robinson has said he does not believe the murder of County Armagh man Paul Quinn was ordered by the IRA's central command.

Mr Quinn, from Cullyhanna, was battered to death by a gang of up to nine men at a farm in County Monaghan last weekend.

His family has blamed the IRA for the 21-year-old's murder.

"I do not believe that there was, on the basis of information that I have, a decision taken at some central command," Mr Robinson said.

"But it is important to establish whether the IRA as an organisation even locally was involved.

"We want to wait until the proper investigation is carried out by the gardai and supported by the PSNI. It (the murder) is an important issue and it cannot be swept to the side."

Interviewed for Radio Ulster's Inside Politics, Mr Robinson also said the killing emphasised the need for the IRA's structures to be closed down completely.
