Man drowns despite rescue efforts Appeal to trace dead man's family
(2 days later)
A man has drowned in the sea off Aberystwyth despite desperate attempts by coastguards to save him. Police have launched an appeal to help trace the family of a man who drowned in the sea off Aberystwyth on Sunday.
The 50-year-old was seen falling into the water from the promenade railings shortly after 2130 GMT. He has been named as Michael Brown, 63, from Birmingham, but police said they had been unable to trace his next of kin so far.
Coastguards and the Aberystwyth inshore lifeboat were sent to the scene but were unable to reach the man because of the full tide, a spokeswoman said. Mr Brown was seen falling into the water from the promenade railings on Sunday shortly after 2130 GMT.
She said the man's body was recovered from the water when the tide receded. Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating. Coastguards, an inshore lifeboat and an off-duty mountain rescuer were unable to reach him because of the full tide.
The man has not been named, but he is thought to have lived locally. His body was eventually recovered from the water when the tide receded.
A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said : "Police have failed to trace any next of kin or members of Mr Brown's family at present - and are therefore appealing for anyone in his family or friends to contact police at Aberystwyth police station on 0845 3302000."
