Earthquake near downtown Los Angeles rattles Southern California

Version 0 of 1. An earthquake centered about six miles northwest of Westwood was felt across Los Angeles this morning. The quake, which occurred at 6:25 a.m. local time, was initially reported to be a 4.7 magnitude by the U.S. Geological Survey; they downgraded it a few minutes ago to a 4.4 magnitude. It was a little more than 5 miles deep, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of any earthquake-related injuries or damage, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Earthquakes with magnitudes below 5 occur fairly commonly each year. There were more than 15,000 such quakes worldwide in 2012, according to the National Earthquake Information Center.
