An extra £10m is to be spent on upgrading Scotland's trunk road network.

Transport Scotland announced the new improvements were part of their budgets for 2013/2014.

The work is expected to increase road safety on a number of routes across the country.

The new funding is in addition to existing planned work by BEAR Scotland and Scotland Transerv.

As part of the improvements the A90 at Stonehaven will be resurfaced while major repairs will be made to the Dumfries by-pass.

Other work scheduled includes upgraded parapets on bridges from the A1 to the M90 and replacement bridge joints on the M8, M80, M9 and A90.

'Responding to concerns'

Transport Minister Keith Brown hailed the additional investment, stressing that road safety would increase as a result of it.

He said: "This extra investment will help us will address some of the issues on road surfaces and structures across the country.

"It is something that drivers feel strongly about and we are responding to their concerns by using this money where it is required most."

He added: "We have invested over £2.5 billion on our roads and motorways since 2007.

"In 2013/14 we are investing over £700m which will ensure we continue to deliver an extensive maintenance and improvement programme with road safety a key priority."
