A police officer who was killed when he was hit by a train had been arrested two days earlier on suspicion of a sexual offence, his force has said. Det Con Ged Swash, of Cleveland Police, died on a level crossing at Cowpen Bewley, Stockton, on 11 March. He had been arrested on 9 March on suspicion of a sexual offence against a woman while he was off duty. Cleveland Police confirmed the 41-year-old, of Billingham, had been bailed pending further inquiries. 'Tragic situation' A spokeswoman said he had been off sick at the time of the alleged offence having been injured while making an arrest, and had therefore not been suspended from duty. "We can confirm the man who died following an incident on a railway line was 41-year-old Ged Swash, who was a serving police officer," the spokeswoman added. "We can also confirm that this officer had been arrested on the morning of Sunday, 9 March following an allegation of a sexual offence on an adult female while off duty. "Specially trained family liaison officers are working with the family to support them in dealing with this tragic situation." |
