Guatemala: Ex-President Admits Taking Taiwan Bribes
Version 0 of 1. Former President Alfonso Portillo pleaded guilty Tuesday in Federal District Court in Manhattan to a charge that he accepted bribes in exchange for diplomatic recognition of Taiwan. In a plea bargain with federal prosecutors, Mr. Portillo, 62, who served from 2000 to 2004, was extradited to the United States almost a year ago on corruption charges, pleading guilty to conspiracy. He read a statement admitting to taking $2.5 million in bribes, with the proceeds funneled through American banks. Sentencing is scheduled for June 23. |
