The death toll from a boat accident on Lake Albert in western Uganda has reached 107, the Ugandan police said Monday, a drastic increase from the figure of 19 dead given hours after the boat capsized on Saturday. The police commander for the Albertine region of Uganda, Charles Ssebambulidde, said rescue teams had pulled dozens of bodies from the lake, above. Lake Albert lies on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and most of the drowning victims were Congolese refugees returning home from a resettlement camp, said the United Nations refugee agency and Ugandan officials. Mr. Ssebambulidde said the authorities confirmed that the boat, which should have carried only 80 people, had more than 150 passengers. |
