Who should be Australia's first knights and dames? – open thread
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/mar/25/australia--knights-dames-open-thread Version 0 of 1. Tony Abbott has caused surprise – and not a little hilarity – by announcing that from now on, Australia will have a beefed-up honours system. Four knights or dames in the Order of Australia are to be created per year. The honour will be awarded to Aussies who have shown "extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit" in their service to Australia – or "humanity at large". So who would you like to see get the tap of the sword on the shoulder? Sir Shane Warne has quite a ring to it, not to mention Dame Kylie. As Australian of the Year, Sir Adam Goodes has to be in with a shout. Dame Edna could now be Dame Dame Edna (and Sir Les Patterson could be Sir Sir Les). Then there's Dame Germaine Greer, which should happen – if only because it rhymes. Since all names are to be recommended by Tony Abbott, and approved by the Queen, don't hold your breath for Sir Malcolm Fraser or Dame Julia Gillard. So which Australian would get your top honours? |
