Jon Barden, refinery manager, played down reports the fire would push petrol prices beyond the £1 per litre mark at garage forecourts.
"The unit where the incident occurred is now shut down and we've experienced some shut-down at associated units.
"The rest of the refinery is running normally and we'll work with our people on-site to ensure that normal production is resumed as soon as possible.
"There will be no shortages- we can maintain the deliveries that we plan to our customers."
