Miranda Hart will become the latest British comic to make the transfer to Hollywood after signing on for a starring role in the new film from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.

Hart, best known for her self-penned BBC sitcom Miranda and a supporting role in period weepie Call the Midwife (also on the BBC) will join Jude Law, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham in an untitled spy comedy.

"I've been a fan of Miranda's for years and am so excited to bring her to the big screen," said Feig, who also oversaw McCarthy in last year's hit buddy comedy The Heat. "I'm also hoping I'll finally get back that lawnmower I loaned her last summer."

For her part, Hart described herself as a "huge fan" of Feig's work, and said she was "beyond excited" at the prospect. "It will be nothing less than a hoot to work with Melissa McCarthy," she added. "By the end of the film I plan to have married Jude Law and have Melissa as our adopted daughter."

Hart will be following in the footsteps of Sacha Baron Cohen, Simon Pegg, Russell Brand, Hugh Laurie, Steve Coogan, Rowan Atkinson, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Fry, all of whom have starred in big-budget Hollywood productions after starting out on the small screen in Britain.

The film is due to hit cinemas on the weekend preceding 25 May 2015, the US Memorial Day holiday.
