Two New York City police officers who were overcome by smoke while responding to a suspicious fire on Coney Island were in critical condition on Monday. Officers Rosa Rodriguez and Dennis Guerra were found unconscious and unresponsive on Sunday afternoon, in the hallway on the 13th floor of a residential building. Rodriguez, 36, is in Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. The 38-year-old Guerra was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. Police commissioner Bill Bratton said both officers suffered carbon monoxide poisoning and the effects of smoke inhalation. Police said a suspect was in custody, but no charges were immediately filed. No other information on the suspect or how the fire started was immediately available. Police and fire officials said the fire has been deemed suspicious. |
