Marine shoots, kills another Marine at Camp Lejeune

A Marine at Camp Lejeune shot and killed another Marine at the facility’s main gate Tuesday afternoon, according to the base. The shooting comes less than a week after the shooting at Fort Hood, Tex., which saw a military truck driver open fire after a dispute over paperwork; he killed four people, including himself, and injured 16 others. That shooting locked down Fort Hood for several hours as authorities searched from building to building for the gunman. In a statement, Camp Lejeune said that the shooting on Tuesday was not being considered an an active shooter situation or an act of terrorism. The shooter was standing guard at the camp’s main gate at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when the shooter used an M4 rifle to shoot and kill another Marine who was also acting as a guard. The Marine who was killed was not identified yet because the next of kin has not been notified. Camp Lejeune provided no other information about what sparked the shooting or the status of the shooter, who also has not been identified. The shooting is being investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. |
