(35 minutes later)
Several people were stabbed on Wednesday morning at a Pennsylvania high school and a suspect was taken into custody, an emergency official said. At least 20 people were injured during a Wednesday morning stabbing attack at a high school in Pennsylvania.
Dan Stevens, the county's emergency management spokesman, told CNN that 20 people were injured in the incident which took place at about 7.20am at Franklin Regional High School, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh. Emergency officials said a suspect was taken into custody after the incident at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 15 miles outside of Pittsburgh.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect and the victims are students, adults or a mix of both. It did not appear that any of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, Stevens said, though several helicopters were seen flying people from the scene to area hospitals. Dan Stevens, the county's emergency management spokesman, said four victims had to be taken to area hospitals by helicopters. He did not specify whether the victims or suspect were students or teachers.
School officials and Murrysville police did not immediately return calls seeking further details, but the school issued a bulletin on its website saying: "A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure." Dr Chris Kaufmann, director of the trauma center at Forbes Regional Hospital in nearby Monroeville, told CNN that seven teenagers had been admitted. He said the injuries include stab wounds to the abdomen, chest and back areas.
The high school was on lockdown, and students were being kept there as a precaution as school and law enforcement officials double-checked the premises. Kaufmann said the injuries were “quite serious, they’re not superficial in nature” and that “several are life-threatening”. The youngest victim at the hostpital was 15, and a number were undergoing surgery, he said.
Stevens said Murrysville is a low-crime area and that the school had recently undergone emergency training. “You can plan for these things, you’re just never prepared for them,” said Stevens.
The school was on lockdown after reports of the incident came in at 7:20am. The school said on its website: “A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure."
