An off-duty police officer has died after being hit by a tanker on the M8. | |
Ian Smollet, 35, from Livingston, who was on foot at the time, received serious injuries when he was hit by the Leyland Daf truck. | |
He died later in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The accident happened on the westbound carriageway, near junction 2, on Thursday afternoon. | |
The road was closed for about five hours. The Edinburgh city bypass and Hermiston Gait were affected by delays. | |
Mr Smollet left a vehicle that had stopped on the hard shoulder of the westbound carriageway at about 15:40 before being hit by the truck. | |
Ch Supt Gill Imery, of Police Scotland, said: "It is with the deepest regret I can confirm that Det Con Ian Smollet, who served in the Lothians and Scottish Borders division, has died following Thursday's collision on the M8. | |
"Our sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time. | |
"Road policing officers are continuing their investigation and I would urge any members of the public who witnessed the collision, or who believe they can assist with this enquiry to contact police immediately." | |
