The former BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis has been charged with indecently assaulting a woman in January 1995, the Metropolitan Police has said.

Travis, who was cleared in February of a string of indecent assault charges dating back to the mid-1970s, is due to appear on bail at Westminster magistrates court on 24 April.

The Metropolitan police, which has been investigating Travis as part of the force's Operation Yewtree inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse linked to the entertainment industry, said in a short statement yesterday evening that the ex-DJ had been charged with one count of indecent assault on a woman over 16 years of age in January 1995.

The 68-year-old broadcaster has consistently protested his innocence since he was first arrested at his home in Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, under Operation Yewtree in November 2012.

His arrest stemmed from allegations made by two women to police during the Jimmy Savile scandal in October 2012. Several more women came forward to police following publicity surrounding Travis's arrest and an impromptu press conference the DJ held at the gates of his house, which he used to strongly deny the women's allegations.

After he was found not guilty in February of 12 indecent assaults on nine women dating back to the height of his fame in the mid-1970s, Travis said that he had been through a "year and a half of hell".

Throughout his four-week trial at Southwark crown court in London, Travis's legal team had argued that he was the victim of a "witch-hunt" and was a scapegoat for Savile's crimes.
