One man has died and another is in hospital after a boat capsized in a river estuary in north Devon, police said.

It is understood the boat overturned at Bideford Bar. Two local boats went to the aid of the 16ft pleasure vessel and recovered the two men from the sea. They were transferred to the Appledore lifeboat, which had been launched, and which bought the boat ashore.

The man who died is believed to be in his 30s. The condition of the injured person is not yet known. One of two dogs with the men also died.

A spokesman for the Appledore Inshore Lifeboat said four RNLI volunteers were called out to the scene and the crew "would have been there in a matter of minutes".

Swansea coastguard watch manager David Hughes said: "Unfortunately both of these men were found in the water without lifejackets on."

It was the second fatality in the county on Friday after a man died in a microlight crash in Colyton, east Devon.
