The car overheated in the first big cat enclosure at the Wiltshire attraction on Friday afternoon. Rangers managed to rescue a woman and two children from the vehicle before it burst into flames.
Rangers managed to rescue a woman and two children from the car before it burst into flames. Visitor George Lear, who saw the drama unfold, said: "The lions just kept their distance and didn't take their eyes off the fire and smoke.
Kevin Ashley, from Longleat Safari Park, said: "The lions were cleared from the enclosure and the safari park was closed." "The rangers were pushing them back but they were reluctant on moving away as they looked interested."
The park said the fire was put out quickly and that neither man nor beast was hurt. Mr Lear said: "The car slowly caught fire and then the whole thing went up leaving the place filled with black smoke."
Visitors to Longleat who witnessed the drama unfold took to Twitter to share their experience. Kevin Ashley, from the safari park, said the lions were cleared from the enclosure and the park was closed.
Anna Lear tweeted: "Slight drama at longleat! Car catches fire in the middle of the lion enclosure! Eeek!" He said the fire was put out quickly and no visitors or animals were hurt.
Fellow visitor George Lear tweeted: "A car set on fire in the lion enclosure at longleat and it made my day".
