Five Nato troops have been killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan, the Nato-led security force Isaf said on Saturday.

"Isaf is still in the process of reviewing the circumstances to determine more facts," the International Security Assistance Force said. It did not provide details of their nationalities.

Helicopters are used extensively to transport troops in Afghanistan. The last major helicopter crash took place in December killing 11 people. when a Blackhawk was shot down by the Taliban.

In August 2011, the Taliban shot down an American Chinook near Kabul, killing 38, the single deadliest incident in the war for US forces.

Also on Saturday, an Afghan university official identified the Americans killed in a shooting at a Kabul hospital earlier this week.

The vice chancellor of Kabul University, Mohammad Hadi Hadayati, named the two as health clinic administrator Jon Gabel and his visiting father, Gary.

Hadayati said that Jon Gabel's wife was wounded in the attack Thursday when an Afghan police security guard opened fire as the family entered the grounds of Cure International Hospital.

The Gabel family was visiting pediatrician Dr Jerry Umanos of Chicago, who was also killed in the shooting.

Hadayati said Jon Gabel, who worked for Morning Star Development, ran a clinic at the university providing low-cost medicine and also volunteered to teach computer classes.
