Kenyan Robert Cheruiyot won the Chicago Marathon but had to be taken to hospital after slipping and banging his head near the finish line.

Cheruiyot had just edged out fellow Kenyan Daniel Njenga in a time of two hours, seven minutes, 35 seconds when he fell after crossing the tape.

"At the moment, it is nothing serious," said his agent Federico Rosa.

Berhane Adere of Ethiopia won the women's race in 2:20:42 ahead of Russia's Galina Bogomolova.

Cheruiyot, who also won this year's Boston Marathon, was expected to spend the night at NorthwesternMemorial Hospital.

"They don't talk of any severe complications," Rosa added. "They just say he's stable."

Although Cheriuyot slipped before he reached the tape, he still managed to hold off Njenga, who finished second in the race for the third time in five years

Race referee Pat Savage said: "Luckily for him, he slipped completely forward. Thefinish line is right at the beginning of the mat, and heended up sliding right across it."
