Two men have been arrested over allegations they made false statements on local election papers in two London boroughs, the Met Police has said.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Tower Hamlets, east London, and 33-year-old man was arrested in Enfield, north London. The two arrests are not linked, officers said.

The electoral returning officers for both boroughs have been informed.

Local council elections are taking place across England on 22 May.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of an offence under section 65a of the Representation of the People Act 1983 after the police received allegations relating to potential false declarations on nomination papers.

The men are being held at a north London police station.
