Former swimming star Geoff Huegill and his wife have been given six-month good behaviour bonds for cocaine possession.

Huegill, 35, and his wife, Sara Hills, 30, pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited drug on Wednesday.

Police arrested the couple at a private function at Sydney's Randwick racecourse in April.

Magistrate Clare Farnan said it was a shame to see Olympian Huegill before the court.

"It's a sad thing to see people in your circumstances in this court," she said at Waverley local court. "It's even more of a mystery for someone with so much to lose like you do."

The court heard that police stopped the swim star on April 26 as he was leaving the bathroom at the races. His wife then approached officers and admitted she was also carrying cocaine.

The couple's lawyer, Dean Woodbury, said his clients felt remorse and humiliation as a result of the media scrutiny over the charges.

Outside, the couple said they were glad the court ordeal was over but knew it would haunt them for the rest of their lives.

"We have let down a lot of people, those who supported us and trusted us," the Olympian told reporters. "That's the part that hurts us the most."

He said it would be difficult explaining the incident to their two daughters, aged two and four months.

"While they are quite young at the moment, at some stage in the future they are going to have the conversation," he said. "Hopefully their lives won't be affected."
