Danny Cipriani called up by England for first time since 2008 Danny Cipriani called up by England for first time since 2008
(35 minutes later)
Danny Cipriani has been called up by England for the first time since 2008. Danny Cipriani is in line for a Twickenham return in an England jersey after being named in a initial training squad featuring players under consideration for next month's game against the Barbarians and the subsequent tour to New Zealand.
The Sale fly-half is included in an initial 20-strong party picked in preparation for the fixture against the Barbarians on 1 June and the pending tour to New Zealand. Cipriani, 26, won the last of his seven England caps in 2008 but has impressed sufficiently for Sale Sharks this season to have forced his way back into head coach Stuart Lancaster's plans. He remains down the fly-half pecking order, however, with Owen Farrell, George Ford, Freddie Burns and Stephen Myler all ahead of him. Barring injury to others, Cipriani is more likely to play against the Barbarians than face the All Blacks.
The 26-year-old won the last of his seven caps in 2008 before losing his way in a celebrity lifestyle. His game-management has been key to Sale's sixth-place finish in the Premiership this season, just 12 months after the club flirted with relegation. The Kiwi-reared lock Michael Paterson, his Sale team-mate Tommy Taylor and the young Exeter hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie are among other interesting names in the 20-strong list for preliminary training next week, which also includes the Worcester full-back Chris Pennell. Only players from clubs whose domestic season has finished were considered, with the full squad to tour New Zealand not due to be finalised until 26 May.
"I judge players on their form for their club. Reputation and what they've done in the past counts for something, but not everything," England's head coach Stuart Lancaster said. "The New Zealand tour and the Barbarians match gives us a chance to look at a wide group of players, some of whom are well known to us, others who we will get to work with for the first time next week," said Lancaster. "This is an exciting challenge for us coaches and it's a great opportunity for those players to put a marker down for selection for the tour and the Barbarians game."
"Danny's definitely improved and Sale have played well. Danny has controlled the games really well. I'm pleased with what he's done and he's in the equation.
"His game management has been the key point this season. His kicking game has been excellent. As with all players, there are areas he can work on.
"If we bring him into camp, our first port of call with him will be to sit him down, go through his game and give him some feedback on what we're looking for.
"Fly-half is such a pivotal position in the team. Players like Freddie Burns, Stephen Myler, Owen Farrell and George Ford are already up to speed with our gameplan and plays.
"Danny would have to get up to speed with all of that and then deliver at international level in terms of execution. That's the challenge for players coming into an international side."
Additional players will be added to the squad after the Premiership play-offs this weekend. Those involved in the final will miss the first Test against the All Blacks in Auckland on 7 June with the final touring squad expected to number 40 players.
