It rained, and it rained a lot in the D.C. area: Storm totals
Version 0 of 1. The deep tropical moisture feed that gushed through the D.C. metro region delivered hefty rainfall totals as expected. Rain Thursday afternoon into this morning totaled roughly 2-4 inches along and west of I-95 and 1-3 inches east of I-95. Isolated pockets west of I-95 received 4-5 inches. Through 10 a.m., the totals at our three airports were: Dulles 3.88 inches, Reagan National 2.65 inches and BWI 1.64″ Western areas received greater totals due to a wave of thunderstorms that paraded through Thursday afternoon and evening, dumping up to 1-3 inches of rain. Locations farther to the east missed out on this surge due to their distance away from the front and a narrow ribbon of dry, sinking air adjacent to the main plume of moisture over the Virginia and North Carolina Piedmont. As the front marched east early this morning, everyone got in on the action with extremely heavy rainfall rates – around one inch per hour. Between 5 and 6 a.m., Dulles Airport picked up 0.91 inches of rain. Between 6 and 7 a.m., Reagan National Airport tallied 1.11 inches. And between 7 and 8 a.m., BWI cashed in with 0.63 inches. 30-day rainfall totals in the region are now in the 6-12 inches rain – two to four times what’s normal. For the calendar year, total precipitation at Reagan National and Dulles airports are around 7 inches above normal. The National Weather Service posted this fairly comprehensive list of rainfall totals from this most recent storm: |
