Three aircraft in search for overboard sailor Search for overboard sailor in Channel called off
(about 2 hours later)
A coastguard helicopter and two other aircraft are searching the Channel north of Alderney for a sailor missing from a ship. The search for a sailor believed to have fallen overboard from a merchant ship in the English Channel has been called off.
It is believed he went overboard from the tanker between the Channel Islands and the south coast of England. The man, believed to have fallen from the ship late on Saturday night, has not been found.
The search is being dealt with by the French and UK coastguard agencies. A coastguard helicopter from the UK and two French aircraft conducted an "intensive" five-hour search.
The coastguard said the incident was in the mid-Channel, 40 miles south of Portland, in Dorset. It is believed the man went overboard from a tanker between the Channel Islands and the south coast of England.
French coastguard authorities co-ordinated the search and said they began looking around 07:00BST and called off the operation at 12:30BST.
The vessel was an 80-metre tanker sailing from Liverpool to the Netherlands.
