Buzzzzzzzz: Truck overturns with 20 million honeybees aboard in Delaware

Version 0 of 1. Buzz, buzz, buzz. Ouch. Up to 20 million honeybees escaped from a tractor-trailer after it overturned Tuesday evening on a ramp just off a highway in Newark, Del. Officials said they were still working Wednesday morning to try to capture the bees in the area after the truck crashed on the Del. 896 ramp to northbound Interstate 95. The truck was hauling 460 hives of honeybees, according to delawareonline. The Delaware transportation department issued an advisory Wednesday morning to drivers to “keep windows closed and make no unnecessary stops” while traveling in the area of I-95 and Del. 896. Transportation officials told local news agencies there that swarms were observed by workers in the area. Delaware State Police cited the truck driver Adolpho Guerra, 55, of Miami, for having an unsafe load. Guerra suffered up to 100 bee stings and was treated at an area hospital, according to reports from delawareonline. Surprisingly, authorities in the area actually had a “bee swarm removal procedure.” The plan included a list of experts to help in a cleanup. “We got ahold of one of those bee providers, and he came right out,” Sgt. Paul Shavack with the Delaware State Police said in a delawareonline article.
