Sir Paul McCartney treated at hospital for virus Sir Paul McCartney treated in Tokyo hospital for virus
(about 9 hours later)
Sir Paul McCartney said he was "extremely moved" by messages of support from fans after he fell ill while in Japan. Sir Paul McCartney has been treated in hospital in Japan after a virus forced him to call off a string of concerts.
The singer has had to cancel a string of tour dates after reportedly contracting a virus. The former Beatle, 71, has postponed five shows in Japan and South Korea.
Tour dates in Japan and South Korea had to be cancelled when doctors said the former Beatle was not fit enough to perform. A statement said: "Since contracting a virus last week that led to the postponement of tour dates, Paul received successful medical treatment at a hospital in Tokyo.
The 71-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, organisers said. "He will make a complete recovery and has been ordered to take a few days rest."
Sir Paul was treated for his illness in a hospital in Tokyo. The statement added: "Paul has been extremely moved by all the messages and well wishes he has received from fans all over the world."
A statement released on his behalf said his treatment had been successful and that doctors had "ordered [him] to take a few days rest". Sir Paul is in the middle of his Out There world tour, which has been on the road for more than a year.
It also said: "Paul has been extremely moved by all the messages and well wishes he has received from fans all over the world." It has already travelled through Japan once as well as visiting North and South America and parts of Europe.
Sir Paul was in Asia as part of a world tour and was scheduled to perform at Jamsil Sports Complex Main Stadium in Seoul next Wednesday in what would have been his first concert in South Korea. He had been due to play four further concerts in Tokyo and Osaka, including one show at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan Hall, where the Beatles performed on their first Japanese tour in 1966.
But his illness caused him to cancel the gig and also miss four other scheduled concerts in Japan, including two in Tokyo. He was then due to make his first trip to South Korea to perform at Seoul's Olympic Stadium.
The gig cancellations mean fans will now not get to see him perform at the Nippon Budokan hall in Tokyo, which is where the Beatles performed during their first Japanese tour in 1966. The tour is due to resume with 19 more dates in the US beginning in Lubbock, Texas, on 14 June.
He is still expected to play 19 US performances later this year including New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Fargo and Kansas City between June and August.
