The astronaut-transport issue seems to be headed toward a resolution: NASA for several years has funded a “Commercial Crew” program that is funneling money to several companies to develop rockets and spacecraft to taxi astronauts to orbit.
The competition for that lucrative and high-profile contract has three major players: SpaceX, Sierra Nevada and Boeing. SpaceX would use its Falcon 9 rocket to launch a capsule to orbit, while Sierra Nevada and Boeing would rely on Atlas V rockets to boost their spacecraft (Sierra Nevada has a winged orbiter, and Boeing has a capsule).
On Thursday night, SpaceX unveiled its new Dragon V2 capsule, a seven-person spacecraft that the company hopes will entice the decision-makers at NASA. Musk presided over the unveiling and climbed inside the capsule to show off its nifty features.
