M1 north closed during rush hour M1 reopens after two-lorry crash in Derbyshire
(about 9 hours later)
A crash involving two lorries has closed the M1 northbound at the height of rush hour. The M1 northbound has reopened after a crash involving two lorries closed it at the height of the morning rush hour.
Two people were injured in the collision, at about 03:00 BST, when a vehicle struck a broken-down lorry in north Derbyshire. The accident happened at about 03:40 BST, when a lorry struck another lorry which had broken down on the outside lane in north Derbyshire.
The road is closed between junction 29, to Chesterfield and Mansfield, and junction 30 to Sheffield and Worksop. One lorry driver was taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where he is said to be in a critical condition.
It is not expected to open until at least noon and is also causing slow traffic on the southbound carriageway. The road was closed between junction 29 at Chesterfield and junction 30 at Sheffield for 10 hours.
Police said the lorry driver, a 48-year-old man from Derby, suffered "life-threatening" injuries.
The driver of the second lorry was not hurt.
Sgt Adrian Pitfield said the motorway remained closed for so long because of the "significant amount" of damage to the vehicles and debris and oil spread over both carriageways.
