(about 4 hours later)
A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after two men died in a crash between a van and a lorry on the M4 in Wiltshire. A van driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after two men were killed on the M4.
The motorway was closed for more than six hours westbound at junction 17 near Chippenham after the collision on a slip road just after 04:30 BST. The men were travelling in the van when it collided with a lorry on the hard shoulder near Chippenham, Wiltshire, at 04:30 BST. They died at the scene.
Two men in the van were pronounced dead at the scene with two others taken to hospital with serious injuries. A fifth man was also hurt, but less seriously. Two other passengers in the van were seriously injured and a fifth man suffered minor injuries, police said.
Police are appealing for witnesses. The arrested man is 37 and from Aberdare in south Wales.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area to allow a backlog of traffic to disperse. The motorway was closed westbound for six hours but has since reopened.
At 12:15 the Highways Agency reported delays of 20 minutes for motorists heading west on the M4. Supt Gavin Williams, from Wiltshire Police, said the van - with five male passengers - had struck a vehicle on the hard shoulder "directly under junction 17 of the M4".
"We're really keen to hear from anybody that may have seen what happened or may have been travelling either on the M4 or around the junction 17 area," he said.
