The family of the dead woman had been informed, police added. A spokeswoman for Oaktree House said it was supporting the family during this "deeply distressing time".
Det Insp Neil Meade, from Avon and Somerset Police, said: "This is a tragic but isolated incident. Our investigation began yesterday soon after the death was reported to us and continues today. According to the care home, the elderly resident was "found dead in her room".
'Tragic isolated incident'
"In line with our normal procedures in the event of a sudden death, the home manager immediately contacted the police and relevant authorities," the spokeswoman said.
"It would be inappropriate for us to comment whilst the police investigation is on-going."
Avon and Somerset Police said the victim's family had been informed and were being supported by specially-trained officers.
"This is a tragic but isolated incident," said Det Insp Neil Meade.
