What I see in the mirror: Faris Badwan

Version 0 of 1.

I've had the same hairstyle since I was 15. For some reason I've always equated people who change their hair a lot with mental illness – that girl who has pink hair one week and blue the next? There's something not quite right there.

A Mexican TV agony aunt once told me, with great authority, that I had very homosexual eyes. I don't really know what that means, but then she started comparing me with Josh, the guitarist in the Horrors: "With him, there's no problem. You, I can see it." I think it's funny that fate has decided to bless me with a boxer's nose to balance my face out.

I'm happy with my height. I'm 6ft 6in. Someone once came up to me and said, "You're not as tall as I expected you to be", which made me laugh. They later admitted they were lying – they had just wanted to say something different.

One of my teeth is a little discoloured, which I could fix with a trip to the dentist if I was inclined, but that's not going to happen any time soon. I like the way I look; that's for better or worse, and I don't see any need to change it. But I'm in my late 20s, so maybe my insecurities will come in 20 years. I'm lucky in that I have found one of the few niches that makes the way I look a positive. Looking like a weird cartoon character and working in an office wouldn't be so good. I probably wouldn't get promoted. But I'm OK being a singer in a band.

• The Horrors' new single, I See You, is out next month. The band will play Glastonbury on 29 June.
