Six children in M1 Barnsley minibus crash Family injured in South Yorkshire M1 motorway crash
(about 1 hour later)
Six children have escaped unhurt from a minibus that was involved in a crash on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire. A woman and a 19-year-old man were seriously injured after their vehicle crashed on the M1 motorway near Barnsley.
One adult was cut free from the vehicle and the northbound carriageway of the motorway has been reopened after being closed for a number of hours. South Yorkshire Police said nine people were in a minibus when it hit the central reservation near junction 37 at 04:35 BST.
The vehicle was between junctions 37 at Barnsley, and 38 when the accident happened at about 04:35 BST. Five children, aged between four months and nine years, suffered cuts and bruises and a four-year-old boy suffered a broken arm.
South Yorkshire Police said "very early indications" were nobody had been seriously hurt. Part of the motorway was closed.
Police said the children's mother, aged 33 and from Leeds, "suffered potentially life-altering injuries to her arm".
A spokesman said the children's father, also aged 33 and from Leeds, who was driving the vehicle, was thought to be unhurt.
All of the injured were taken to hospital in West Yorkshire for treatment.
