(35 minutes later)
Queensland police are negotiating with an armed man who is locked in a house with a baby. An armed man who was locked in a south-east Queensland house with a toddler has been arrested.
The 26-year-old mother of the infant escaped from the Caboolture home but could not take her baby. The child was rescued from the home in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, on Thursday afternoon.
She has been treated for minor head and facial injuries. "The baby has just come out. I don't know how old it is, it is close to two, 19 months," a police spokeswoman said.
The man is believed to have fired at least one shot before police arrived about 10.30am. "Ambulance has just taken the child and the mother for observation.
“It is not confirmed if [the shot was let off] at someone or in a threatening manner,” a spokeswoman said. "I don't know if he has any injuries. It doesn't appear so."
Neighbouring streets were blocked off and residents advised to stay indoors. The man is believed to have fired at least one shot before police arrived at the home about 10.30am AEST.
The mother, 26, escaped earlier in the day, but could not take her child.
She was treated for minor head and facial injuries.
