USA v Germany: Hulk Hogan and Will Ferrell issue World Cup rallying calls

USA fans and players looking for a pep-talk before Thursday’s decisive game against Germany have been given a boost by WWE’s Hulk Hogan and Anchorman actor Will Ferrell.

In an online message to fans, Hogan says he’s “so pumped up about the men’s USA soccer team”, and tells their opponents: “Good luck Germany when the men’s US soccer team pound you down to the ground.

“I guess all I have to say: USA is the greatest country in the world. The USA men’s soccer team is going to wipe out Germany, and by the way, what you going to do, Germany, when the men’s USA soccer team runs wild on you?”

Ferrell, meanwhile, appeared on stage in front of fans gathered in Recife, told them he would be playing in the game and promised: “I’m going to bite every German player I have to.”

With the game on in the middle of the working day in the US, office-based fans are expected to set a new record in the ratings for online live streaming – though the USA team also tweeted a letter template for fans to use in an attempt to be given the day off.

USA need only a draw to be sure of qualification, and would top the group if they win. They could also go through even with a defeat, if Ghana versus Portugal ends in a draw.
