A 26-year-old is fighting for his life after having an adverse reaction to the drug ketamine while at Glastonbury.

The young man, who is from the south-east, was rushed to Bristol Royal Infirmary on Wednesday night after taking the illegal drug at the festival, which opens fully on Friday with performances by the first acts.

Martin Dunscombe, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset police, said the man, who has not been named, remained in hospital in a "life-threatening condition". His family have been informed.

Dunscombe said the police did not believe the batch of the class-B drug was contaminated and regarded this as an "individual reaction".

He added: "This is another tragic reminder of the risks of experimenting with drugs."

Separately, a 67-year-old woman died at the festival on Wednesday night from natural causes. Her death is not being treated as suspicious and the police believe she may have had an underlying medical condition.

By 9am on Thursday, the police said there had been a fall in reported crime of about 30% at the festival so far, with 12 arrests made for drug-related offences and theft.
