East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell says local people were "shocked" by the news. Local priest Fr Michael Collins said it was alarming "that a 17-year-old girl could be killed in this way".
"It frightens us because it seems to be a part of culture nowadays that violence is simply seen as a solution to all the problems," he added.
